Welcome to the
Gilmore Gallery of the Arts
(formally House of the Spirit Bear Inc.)

We are currently web based and located in Vancouver BC, Canada. We specialize in aboriginal art primarily Woodlands, Southwest and Northwest coasts. Private viewings are always available at my home studio. Not being tied down by a retail outlet allows us to be more efficient in locating collections and rare pieces of art. We strive to be your only resource for the named artists we represent.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!

Having operated a retail gallery on Main Street in Vancouver for years has given us the experience needed to be well educated in the native art world and always cherish our relationships within the art community.

We also handle small and large estates. Not just aboriginal as we have expertise in many other areas including collectable furniture, sculptures, hand blown glass and many other art works. Please contact us with any questions you may have.

Thank you so much for visiting our web site and please keep coming back as we always have new works being presented.

Kind Regards

Darrell Gilmore

DAPHNE ODJIG ORIGINAL WORK FOR SALE

#88 "Nostalgic Memories"' 23"x29" Acrylic on Canvas

$27,900.00 cdn

In the 1970s, Daphne Odjig brought together a small group of native artists to collaborate with and support one another. The group—Odjig, Norval Morrisseau, Jackson Beardy, Carl Ray, Joseph Sanchez, Eddy Cobiness and Alex Janvier—quickly gained attention for their spirited, stylized canvases that gave a visual interpretation to the First Nations oral tradition and challenged the establishment's perspective of Aboriginal art as craft. The group's work covered the gamut from intensely spiritual to slyly humorous, deeply personal to fiercely political. It took Canada by storm, in both native and non-native communities. Eventually they were even referred to as the "Indian Group of Seven," a tongue-in-cheek comparison that nonetheless pointed to the impact this group made both culturally and politically. The Gilmore Gallery of the Arts has available all the Indian Group of Seven painters.

Ojibway / Woodlands Artist - Bruce Morrisseau

Bruce Morrisseau, nephew of renowned painter Norval Morrisseau, was born in 1965 in Beardmore Ontario. He has been creating and expressing the woodlands style taught to him by his uncle for over 10 years. It is Bruce's wish to pass on Ojibway culture and traditions to all people. He feels he can express himself through this style of art and finds it very healing.

CROWS AND ARROWS

GARY R. MILLER - original Stone Lithograph 1980

First original stone lithograph is a four-color image based upon the Crow sacred arrow ceremony of courage practiced by various Indian \nations throughout the plains regions of North America. This ceremony was very important to the Crow nation.

In the ceremony, young warriors would stand side by side or in a circle and shoot their arrows straight into the air. The warriors had to remain perfectly still. The one whose descending arrow landed closest without killing him, was considered to have shown the greatest amount of courage. The tribe felt that he was chosen by the creator for an even greater purpose.... that of leading the tribe in battle. Death in battle was considered a privilege by the Crows. The ceremony served to instill pride and bravery in times of conflict and kept the nation strong.

Blessings of the Great Spirit

Eagle medicine is a gift from our Creator. It reflects the vision of the great spirit for the people. The eagle is said to carry our prayers to the Creator. It also represents enlightenment within one's self, searching in the seven directions for wholeness and wellness. It is the highest honor in our culture to receive an eagle feather. It says to our people that the ancestors are happy with us and honor our journey on the red road. The eagle is honored to see how the people respect it's feathers and continue to share the blessings of our ceremonial ways. I say 'Chi Meegwetch' to all nations who honor and respect the blessings of our traditional ways.
