NORVAL MORRISSEAU

Norval Morrisseau, also called Copper Thunderbird, rose to fame in the 1960s when he developed the unique painting style known as the Woodland School. Today this art style is called Anishnaabe painting, a reference to the artist’s heritage.

McMichael - Canadian Art | Collection d'art Canadien

Norval Morrisseau' s work can be seen at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection exhibition Woodlands School

The Woodland School examines the vibrant art of Woodland School painters Norval Morrisseau, Daphne Odjig, Eddy Cobiness, Carl Ray, Alex Janvier, Blake Debassige, Saul Williams, Martin Panamick, and Goyce Kakegamic, Cecil Youngfox and other Woodland School artists. The Woodland School style of painting was popularized through the work of Norval Morrisseau who caught the attention of the art-buying public with his first exhibition at the Pollock Gallery in Toronto in 1962. Morrisseau, defying cultural restrictions, based his work on traditional Ojibway visual imagery taken from petroglyphs and Midewewin birchbark scrolls, as well as from the myths and legends of his people.

The Woodland School style has several characteristics including; a predominant black form line, an undifferentiated background, pure colours, x-ray perspectives, and a system of interconnecting lines known as linear determinatives that indicate sacred power. The overall effect produces a bright vivid image similar in some ways to stained glass. The Woodland School has become one of the most recognizable forms of First Nations art.

Norval Morrisseau - "Legend of the Fish People at the Great Flood" only 30 of a total of 49 in the 1980 Limited edition 31" x 41". Beautiful 100% rag paper with unfinished edges. Would be very nice in a floated frame. Hand signed and in Excellent condition. In this picture I had to use weights to hold down the edges and Photoshoped them of and that is the cause of the blurry corners. Can send original photos.

The teaching about how a new Earth was created after the Great Flood is one of the classic Nanabush* Stories. It tells of how Nanabush managed to save himself by resting on a chi-mitig (huge log) that was floating on the vast expanse of water that covered Mother Earth.
-
* - a trickster; Ojibway hold Nanabush as essential to any contact with the sacred.

Thunderbird (Pinisiwuk)

Thunderbird is considered the most powerful Manitou. They migrate with the birds that appear in spring and disappear in the fall. They are in charge of the second Degree of the Midewiwin Lodge, as well as the Shaking Tent ceremony. They assist the Anicinaabe by driving away the ominous earth and water Manitou(s). Thunderbirds and the Sea Serpents of the lake are adversaries. In fact, Thunderbirds feed upon the great Sea Serpent of the lakes. Visually, connecting lines from Thunderbird feathers usually run from the wings, illustrating the knowledge and power given from above, to those below representing the connection from sky to earth.

Norval Morrisseau created six drums for a Victoria, BC gallery in the late 70's. We have been told that they were of different sizes but similar designs. This one was purchased through the gallery then sold again in 2000 through the Seahawk Auctions here in BC. Now available for sale. Estimated value is $SOLD
